Q-Tip, while perhaps better known by some for his lyrical prowess both as a solo artist and as 1/3 of A Tribe Called Quest, is a mastermind behind the boards. Aside from producing almost all of Tribe’s first 3 albums in their entirety, Q-Tip has delivered a string of hits for other artists from the early 90′s up until the present day. His jazz sensibility and ear for great beats has made him a true innovator, and has left us with timeless cuts that still sound fresh today. Here are some of our favorite non-Tribe Q-Tip productions.
1 of 3 tracks produced by Q-Tip for Mobb Deep’s classic sophomore album The Infamous
Mobb Deep – Temperature’s Rising
The first incarnation of the Crooklyn supergroup, featuring Buckshot, Masta Ace and Special Ed. Off the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s Crooklyn
The Crooklyn Dodgers – Crooklyn (Baseball Mix)
Another case where the remix outshines the original version
Craig Mack – Get Down (Remix)
Great flip of The Enforcer’s “Hey Jude” (which would later be used on Gang Starr’s “DWYCK” and MC Serch’s “Back to the Grill”)
Diamond D – K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid)
Native Tongues affiliates hailing from Brooklyn. Off their second album Gravity
Da Bush Babees – 3 MC’s
Cypress Hill – Illusions (Q-Tip Remix)
Bonus Beats:
Q-Tip creating a loop from Bobby Rush’s “Chicken Heads”, straight off the vinyl
